Thanks to everyone who was playing along with the codes, riddles and puzzles because YOU worked out the title and you've revealed it for the rest of us. It's called 'Secret Codes And Battleships' from a lyric on the album that goes like this ..

It's an album about how hard it is to hold on to love when the whole world is breaking up.

We're pleased to be able to reveal the album cover for Darren's forthcoming album 'Secret Codes and Battleships'. Designed by John Gilsenan of London graphic design outfit iwantdesign - the front cover has been over 12 months in the making ..

It was March 1st 2010 when Darren sent designer John Gilsenan a 'love letter' about his work. Darren had been impressed with John's work on Tracey Thorn's 'Into The Woods' album and his campaign for UK band 'The Script'. He had connected the dots and stumbled upon John's wide range of work. "I was looking for someone capable of making an album cover that was a piece of art - and one that you could get lost in," Darren explained. "I feel all of John's work has that quality. He's not just a designer but a multi faceted artist who photographs, paints and physically makes objects to include in his work. A real artist". Photographer Ellis Parrinder was commissioned to photograph Darren in armour and various objects borrowed from the Royal Shakespeare Company – and John began the task of sourcing images and creating a world in which to surround the singer. John developed a code, a series of symbols – even a bespoke font and then combined all of this with Pollock-like paint overlays and hidden layers – all of which work their way through the theme of the artwork and videos on the album.

Darren's love affair with album art began as a child of the 70's obsessing over vinyl. “My connection to music was as much physical as it was aural,” he explains. “I got lost in the artwork and could stare at it for hours. Records like Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk', Prince's 'Sign O The Times' and of course perhaps the most famous album cover of all time, The Beatles 'Sgt. Peppers..’ All of these records adopted a collage and maximalist approach and you could literally find something new each time you looked at them. In this digital age – I wanted to make sure that the magical and tangible aspect of my record was firmly rooted in this fascination that I had for the physical object.”

Darren continues,

“My album is about being lost on a journey to find your true happiness - and about the war between lovers and their struggle to stay together in a world that just wants people to break up. It's about all the things we dare not say to each other but having the courage to do so. There's a lot going on in the music and that's why this was the only cover I could have imagined for 'Secret Codes and Battleships’.”

So there'll be 3 physical versions of the album. A standard 12 track CD with 16 page booklet. A Special Edition 2 CD with 32 page booklet that has the 12 track album on one disc and a 7 track bonus disc. Finally there's a Collector's Edition box that includes 2 CD's (the album plus a 12 track bonus disc) a full 12 inch sized 32 page booklet, the album on Violet colored 12 inch vinyl and one of 4 limited edition lithographs. This box is a limited to 2000 units and has to be seen to be believed. Hopefully there's something for everyone. The regular and special edition will also be on iTunes and digital outlets worldwide but the Collector's Edition box will only be sold via my sandbag store but they ship worldwide. Album Review - "Secret Codes And Battleships" by Darren Hayes

Let's face it. If Darren Hayes made an album of reggae polka, I'd still probably like it. My love affair with the music of Darren Hayes over the years has mostly to do with the fact that a lot of what he creates is very human. His music is relatable and as a person in my thirties who has lived, loved, lost and conquered demons and by some strange twist of fate, met the one person that I want to spend the rest of my life with, I can really appreciate the depth of emotion that is explored in Darren Hayes new full-length album.

"Secret Codes And Battleships" is about holding onto what is precious and dear in our lives despite the war of emotions and negative circumstance happening all around us. This theme is told ever so eloquently on this album which is full of grace and sees the Savage Garden frontman return-to-form to the epic sound that made him an international superstar back in the day.

The album opens with a subtle and gorgeous soundscape in "Taken By The Sea" which is the cold and terrifying realization that our world may just be falling apart from underneath us and everything that we know and love could be instantly wiped away in a metaphorical tsunami.

In "Nearly Love" we hear Darren question a new-found disconnection in a relationship that is evolving into something different. The upbeat and hopefulness of this song slightly suggests that this disconnectivty isn't necessarily the end of the world, but possibly about something moving forward.

Perhaps the saddest track on the album is "Black Out The Sun". It's a tale of lost love that has left a huge, gaping and seemingly never ending hole in our hearts. It's not hopeful in the slightest and the music video is definitely evident of such. But even in the darkest hours, it's amazing how Darren can paint pictures in a melodic and beautiful musical canvas.

It's no surprise that "Talk Talk Talk" is shaping up to one of the most successful radio singles in Australia and very popular amongst international pop bloggers. When I first the single, it hit home right away and will continue to do so for those that are having a bit of relationship drama in which our partners just can't seem to break through to us.

Rounding out the first half of the album is "Bloodstained Heart" which has an amazing Coldplay moment at 2:15 when the track crescendos into a kaleidoscope of astounding light and colour making it one of the most epic pop songs of this year.

My hands-down absolute favorite song on the album is definitely "God Walking Into The Room". Besides the slight nod to Madonna's "Like A Prayer" (which Darren confirmed to me via Twitter) the song valiantly describes the overwhelming sense of completeness that we all experience when we eventually connect with the person of our dreams. "Hand upon The Bible, you're love is survival" is just one of the lyrics that speak so effervescently to me, making this track a firm favorite.

"Roses" is a little tale about not taking our lives for granted and making the most of every moment with no regrets. Sonically, it kinda of reminds me of "I Miss You" from Darren's first solo album "Spin".

"Cruel Cruel World" is a hard-hitting and effortlessly cool track about the one person in life who gets us and is able to put up with all our little freaky idiosyncrasies. It's another favorite of mine on the album because of it's not-so-obvious placement towards the end of the album as it packs a musical punch in almost stadium like proportions.

"The Sirens Call" really reminds me of Annie Lennox's "Why" with it's euphoric synths and beautiful percussion flow. It's a blissful close to "Secret Codes And Battleships" which ultimately leaves us as listeners slowly healing from the emotional battle scars we've attained along this scary and epic adventure we call life.

I feel that after listening to "Secret Codes And Battleships", it's the soundtrack to a lot of emotional battles I myself have lived through and have come out triumphant. This album documents very eloquently that life truly can change at any given point in time and if we are to avoid being hit by the proverbial bus, we need to grasp onto those we love, love them back with all our might and fight like a brave-hearted soldier to keep it.

In the end, nothing in life is guaranteed and this is something that Darren Hayes knows very well as an artist, musician and storyteller. Although my favorite solo album of Darren Hayes is still the masterpiece that is "Tension And The Spark", "Secret Codes And Battleships" truly is an artistic winner which confirms Darren's place in the pop almighty. Very few people can create the art he does so effortlessly.

[FIRST LISTEN] Darren Hayes Releases New Album Teaser

When I recently spoke with pop singer Darren Hayes in Sydney he described his new album, titled "Secret Codes & Battleships," as "a masterclass of all the songwriting and producing" that he has learned over the last two decades. The result is one of his finest pop efforts to date that will appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

Stay tuned for more of Hayes' in-depth video commentary about the album and his inspiration very soon.

Introduced by the singles "Talk Talk Talk" and "Black Out The Sun," the star's new album will be released on October 25. To give fans a taste of what's to come he released an extensive album preview with clips from the record on YouTube this morning.

Recorded around the world from Stockholm to Los Angeles and Sydney, Darren collaborated with people like mixer Robert Orton (Lady Gaga), Carl Falk (The Wanted, Nicole Scherzinger) Phil Thornalley (Pixie Lott, Natalie Imbrugila), Steve Robxon (Taylor Swift, Take That) and his old pal Walter Afanasieff with whom he worked on his Savage Garden albums and his first solo record.

A press release explains what people can expect from this record. "The album is a deeply personal journey from despair to hope, and as with all journeys, there's a beginning, a middle and an end." Listen to the album preview after the break and get familiar with songs like the string-laden "Talk Talk Talk," the spine-tingling "Hurt" and "Don’t Give Up," which touches hearts and tightens stomachs with the melodic flair and searing honesty that is Darren's calling card.

One of the album's highlights is the emotive and perfectly delivered "Bloodstained Heart" that concerns the "worst day of the worst month of the worst year, but it says I will pick up your pulsing, bloodstained heart from the gutter and we will get through this, together." We are sorry to let you all know that there have been delays manufacturing the special edition of the album in the UK The special edition packaging and booklet is so detailed that it is taking some extra time being made, unfortunately this is something beyond our control. As most fans have pre-ordered the special edition it means we have had to move the Uk release date back a few days to ensure every fan gets their album and music delivered to them on the same day - the new release date of SECRET CODES AND BATTLESHIPS in the UK is 24th October. Pls note the new release date might not show on retailers websites straight away.

We must apologise to everyone, but please know this is only because we are trying to deliver you the best possible product we know how.
