Darren Hayes fans looking for clues

The video for Darren Hayes’ new single Talk Talk Talk has deliberate clues on what fans can expect from his October-due album Secret Codes And Battleships. It’s his first release since he signed with Universal and returned to a major label.

Hayes tells TMN that he started working on the album cover a year ago with designer John Gilsenan. The video was written and produced by Hayes’ husband Richard Cullen in collaboration with animator and film makers Andrew Philip and Gavin Elder.

For his hardcore fans, the former Savage Garden frontman had earlier been providing clues to the album’s title. Some clever packaging will come with the album: he’s already got the colour scheme.

“Violet is the colour of the album,” says Hayes, who this week was filming two videos before returning to his London base next month.

Gary Barlow's casting as The X Factor's head judge has proved to be "genius", singer Darren Hayes has said.

The Take That frontman took over from former top man Simon Cowell for the new series of the show, and Darren - who was a guest mentor on the Australian version of the talent contest - is a big fan.

"He's adorable and it's tough isn't it, because Gary's the one we all love and you want him to be a softie and he's actually not, he's quite hard," the former Savage Garden star said.

"And he gets away with it because if someone's a great singer and a great songwriter, you have to respect them. I think it's genius that they've cast him in that role - he's earned the right to say that stuff."

But Darren - whose new album Secret Codes And Battleships is out on October 17 - admitted he missed seeing fellow Aussie Dannii Minogue on the show.

"Dannii was my favourite judge, I miss her. She's great on TV and I always thought she was really fair," he added.

The Truly Madly Deeply singer said he may have considered entering the contest if it had been around when he was starting out.

"It's so much harder to get a record deal, it's so much harder to even get a gig these days. I think it's really difficult to put a foot in the door and who are we to judge somebody?

"We've found some great talent in this country - look at someone like Leona Lewis. To think that that girl would've sat in a room somewhere without anyone noticing her is kind of insane. So I think it's a good platform."

Exclusive: Darren Hayes 'wrote songs for Dannii Minogue'

Darren Hayes has revealed that he recently wrote a number of tracks for Dannii Minogue.

The former Savage Garden singer said that he is a huge fan of the star and was keen to help her work on a new album.

He told Digital Spy: "I've never met Dannii, but I love her! She's so good on TV. I think she's allowed to do what Kylie can't do because she's a bit less guarded.

"I was actually writing songs for Dannii - or rather I was trying to, but I don't think she got any of them. I met her management a while ago and I presented them with a load of songs that I thought would be perfect for her to release."

He continued: "I think at the time the label wanted to go with something a bit cooler and lot more underground. She should make pop music like Robyn's - she could easily pull it off."

Hayes's latest single 'Black Out The Sun' is out now. His new album Secret Codes And Battle Ships follows on October 17.

This was me on the phone to Michael - the London fella who found the last clue that unlocked the album preview video for all of us. He was a lovely chap. I promised Michael I'd post the photo. So here I am on my assistant's phone chatting to Michael with my iPhone in my other hand snapping a shot of egotistical self!

We managed to grab 5 minutes of Darren’s time this week during his hectic press and rehearsal schedule to ask him a quick question about his recent appearance on Australia’s X-Factor:


Recently you were a judge on the Australian X-Factor. How different do you think the music industry is today than when you started out trying to secure a record deal for Savage Garden?

I get asked about realty t.v shows and especially X Factor a lot these days. It’s understandable given the prominence of the shows and the coverage they receive in the media. There are a lot of performers who have gone to great lengths to criticise the formats and blame them for the massive shift in the dynamic of the music industry. I am not one of them.

I see X Factor as a foot in the door to young musicians who don’t seem to have the same avenues that I had starting out 20 years ago. Live gigs and sending out demos were the only ways to really get signed when I was starting out. As is common knowledge, there are less and less venues for artists to play live gigs in – and before it crashed and burned, Myspace virtually decimated the demo tape culture. If you don’t exist online, you don’t exist. Beyond that, record labels don’t seem to have true A&R departments anymore with a dedicated team of people scouring for new talented and nurturing a diamond in the rough, which is what I was.

Would I have gone on X Factor if I were starting out today? Absolutely. But I think I would have burnt up in the initial audition process. I was a very shy and very delicate thing growing up. I had the luxury of years in cover bands and developing my confidence on stage before I ever hit the public consciousness. So it is a changed world, yes. Idol and X Factor have produced some amazing pop voices like Kelly Clarkson and Will Young who seem to have done what most contestants sadly never get to do after these shows: they developed a career and a sound of their own and are true artists in their own right. So I think of these shows as the new demo tape really. What I’d love to see – is more focus on artistry – allowing bands, instruments and introducing songwriting and production into the fold.
