Almost home..

How can I sum up the past few days?
Blur. I'm tired. I miss Rich. I miss England. It's sorta time.

I don't think a human being should be away from their family as long
as I have been really. I am the son of a seafaring man. I guess it's in
the blood. But today I realized I haven't slept in my own bed since September 25.

It's not bad. Or sad. Or a drag. But it's a head trip. It sort of makes everything take
on a surreal quality. Moments flash by and they involve taxis, train stations and planes. Just things going places.

I wonder if the disconnection makes the performances so full of connection?
You see, the shows have been amazing. Like tonight in Philly. We really made a unique experience. It was hard to top New York - so about ten minutes in I just stopped trying to. And in its place a brand new experience arrived.

The audience were cheeky, attentive, fun and gracious.

I found little bits of other songs coming through - Michael Hutchence was there alongside Prince tonight.

It's amazing how much Steve and I miss our partners and I think that solidarity has brought us closer together.
I described him tonight as one of my best friends and it wasn't just rhetoric.
It was a relief.

I'm off to Washington for a moment tomorrow. Then we fly to Boston.
Almost home now ;)

Through the wind and snow..

We finally made it to Boston.
The XM performance and recording went amazingly well..
Ron, the DJ who interviewed me and hosted the event was a total gem and gave us a tour of the whole network which was incredible.
Definitely the future of radio there!

It was snowing hard all day..
We had our plane delayed for a couple hours in DC and finally made it to Boston for our last night with the wonderful Steve Young.

Steve had a prior family commitment in London and left today - so last night Brad, William (from Co5) and I took Steve out to dinner to say thanks for such a wonderful job. It was mildly amusing that we'd landed in town the night of the David Gray concert, and because of our accents all the ladeeez thought that we were either David Gray himself or part of his band. In fact, many times fellow diners would come up to the table and ask if William or Steve was 'David Gray'. It was quite funny. Steve pointed out afterwards that there was someone at the table who'd sold quite a few more records than the Mr Gray and yet who remained blissfully unrecognized! Lol.


It's really sad saying goodbye to Steve when we've got one more in store tomorrow in Boston - but we'll be helped by the lovely Tyrone for my final acoustic gig in the US for this year.

Steve, Shave, Pete and I will be rocking it out together for Londoner's on New Years Eve and of course next year we are still flirting around with the idea of some club dates in the UK in Feb and a club tour of the US in March/April 08.

Still early stages but it's being discussed.

Once again, thanks Steve for all your hard work on this run.
For being my friend.
And for being a top bloke.
Love to you and the family and see you soon!!!

Winding Down - see you in the New Year

So I'm sitting in my hotel room in Boston. I'm winding down, unravelling, unwinding.
The body is already doing that thing it does when it knows the coast is clear : it's slumping. I've just watched 'Sleepy Hollow' on T.V
I ate some M and M's.
I am wearing a leopard patterned bath robe (not my fault, it's in the hotel room.. it's hideous but hilarious)
I am detoxing from the stress and craziness that was this year.

I can't believe it's finally end of the 'schedule' for me.
It seems like every second this year I've had something to do and now I can
finally shut down until New Year.
I know the album only came out in August, but as many of you know I've been
working non stop all year on this. And it's been pretty consuming.

I feel like so much has happened I sort of want to recap it a bit.

I started my own label.
I did my first ever residency in London at the soho revue bar.
I got my first official magazine cover on Attitude magazine in the UK.
I had my first top 20 UK single on my own label.
I did a gazillion photo shoots.
I played in a gazillion radio stations.
I sold out the Royal Albert Hall.
I went home to Australia THREE TIMES this year for work.
I co directed my first ever video.
I broke attendance records at Borders stores for my U.S in stores.
I shot my third live DVD since being a solo artist.
I released my third album since being a solo artist.
I finished my eleventh year as a recording artist.
I learned so much.
I gained so much.
I lost so much.
I loved so much.
I hurt so much.
I sang harder, stronger, better, faster than ever before.
I put on the greatest show on earth.
I shared my life with a bunch of strangers who went on to become best friends.

There's been a lot of energy going outward.
And now I just want a few moments alone.

I'm not going to write to you until the New Year.
I'm sure you all understand. It's been probably more than a year of constant
updates and I'm going to take this time to recharge, reset and replenish.

Stay tuned as admin will probably let you know soon about the club tour next year.
We plan to play select dates in UK in February and a full national tour of the US in March/April 2008.
It's all being put together as we speak. The sooner we know, we'll let you know.
Expect it to be small rooms and sweaty gigs with an entirely new slant on what we did in 2007. Re-arranged. Re-jigged. Revived.

I want to thank each and every one of you for your kindness and love.
I'll check in with you after Christmas.

The Side Two Tour - Further Dates Added Due To Demand!!

Due to overwhelming demand additonal shows for London and Birmingham been added to Darren Hayes 'The Side Two Tour'. Tickets go onsale to the public on Saturday 22nd December from 9am with the exception of the additional Birmingham show which goes on sale from Monday 24th December from 9am.

Fans in Europe will also get an opportunity to see 'The Side 2 Tour' in Amsterdam on 21st February 2008. Full details to follow as soon as we have them. MEMBERS OF DELICACY, DARREN'S OFFICIAL FAN CLUB will as is customary, be able to purchase tickets for events prior to the general public.

Checking In

I said I'd check in with you after Christmas so here I am.
I just looked and saw it was December 8th the last time I blogged.
Wow it has felt longer than 3 weeks since I poured my heart out on my sleeve and into a paper cup and gave it to you. But here I am again.

I'm already over Christmas and New Years wishes (bah humbug! hehe) but I will say it was lovely. We were supposed to go away somewhere schamncy and I got a cold so decided to stay in and have a quiet Christmas. Rich's best friend and his girlfriend came over and we had a traditional dinner at home in Notting Hill. Unexpected but exactly what the doctor ordered.

I've seen 'The Golden Compass' 3 times and I'm obsessed with it.
I can't believe some of the negative attention and speculation it received from some of the gutter press around the world. Some of the criticism was entirely based on the fact that it didn't open with record breaking box office numbers, in spite of the fact that it was the number one movie in Europe for 3 weeks. No wonder we don't read reviews! Who needs that kind of poison? I saw the film presuming it would be flawed and loved it so much. I do hope it does well enough to warrant making the subsequent two films. If you haven't read Phillip Pullman's 'Northern Lights' series I do suggest it. There are all sorts of freaky parallels between his world and the one I imagined in 'This Delicate Thing'. I love the idea that our souls are a part of us but of their own free will.

I digress.
I've been spending ages on my D.J set for New Years Eve. I'm so excited about it. There's a really cool mix of old skool and new stuff and little nods toward my fave music. Those who are coming should expect it to be a floor stomping couple of hours of fun.
As for the live set, Shave has been working up some genius magic making sure this show is something that contains fresh and one off things you've never seen or heard before. Woot!

Ah did I tell you I received more than a few incredible presents over the holidays from loved ones including a vinyl copy of Kate Bush's 'Ariel' album. It has a gorgeous 12 inch 24 page book. It brought back the joy of why I love vinyl so much. Large format artwork. I truly do hope I can release 'Delicate' on vinyl at some stage. It's definitely in the plans. After the U.S dates in March I do plan to go away and hybernate until the next record but in my absence there are things I'm going to release. One of them will be the live DVD of 'The Time Machine Tour' and the other, 'These Delicate Films We Made' - which is the 13 animated videos with 5.1 surround sound. There are the animated videos you've already seen plus short films for 'Setting Sun' 'Neverland' 'Maybe' 'A Conversation With God' 'Fear of Falling Under' 'Waking The Monster' and more. I'm so thrilled I can do this stuff! Hopefully in my down time I can try to reinvent the wheel a bit more musically tho it's probably way too early for me to be even thinking about that!
But that's how my mind gets after a few weeks off. Busy.

On the busy front I guess I should get back to my D.J set.
I want to make sure it's spakingly good so I better do some more work.

Getting ready for new years!
Current mood: adventurous

I'm in the studio with Shave - over in East London (a place I rarely go) and we're putting the finishing touches on the band arrangements (surprises) for New Years and he's helping me a little with my mix for my DJ set afters.
Don't expect me to be literally 'spinning'. I don't spin. I don't beat match. I do however put together a bloody awesome mix on a laptop so do expect me to be looking at the lap top a lot and possibly getting tipsy.

Now, why don't I go to the East of London much?
It's weird, it's like a North vs South thing. Too hard I say. I have to catch buses and trains and navigate through strange lands to get to the cool part of London that boasts Hoxton and the fab clubs like Boombox at it's fingertips. Me, I'm a West End Boy. Or West London specifically. And it's strange how used to a 'hood you can get thereby encouraging you never to really leave it.

But leave it I did - and it always feels good to go for a drive and 'see' bits of London I don't normally see. I listen to my music (not MY music, today it was ELO) and have a good think on my way over to the Shave.

As I type he's in Second Life.
I don't get it.
I know I should. But I don't.
I'm already too enslaved to my laptop. I don't want a whole second life to live.
I can barely keep up with my own!

On another note, I can't wait to spend a month in the gym before the tour starts. I've got that awful holiday 'blerggh' feeling where your body is just rebelling against eating so much CRAP!! But before I do that, I DO intend to have fun on New Years Eve.
Warning to all in attendance : I can not be held responsible for my behavior after I stop singing. Hehe. Ie after midnight I'm like a Gremlin.
In Second Life, of course, I shall be sober.

Right I'm off.
I'm going home to a nice hot cooked dinner for me!

New Year’s Eve show

First of all thanks to all of you who attended thereby making it possible.
Couldn't have done it without you, but I'm sure you're getting that by now!
It was an extraordinary atomosphere in the room and I loved that it felt like a party with you rather than a show.

We did our thing - and it was a long thing (set list at the end of this post)..
Afterwards I played my dj mix which I'd been working on for ages.
It was such a thrill to see people boogie on down to my choices and I loved
popping out and shaking my rumpmaker (what's up with my adjectives here?) when I could.

Got so carried away singing completely forgot to count down to New Years and I think 2008 arrived somewhere in the middle of 'Dress You Up' !
All in all up there with my best New Years Ever.. and I can't thank you all enough for this memory.

Due to overwhelming demand we have just released more tickets to the final show in the UK for Darren's 'Side 2 Tour'.

This will be the last chance for London Audiences to see Darren Hayes perform live in 2008. As the original allotment of 300 tickets sold out so quickly the show has been moved into the larger room and we can now offer more tickets to this previously sold out event.

We have held back a portion of tickets exclusively for Fan club members who can purchase tickets using their unique code. The newly released tickets are also available for sale to the general public.

The revolution will not be televised

A while ago I just stopped reading tabloids.
I don't mean just the newspapers like the 'Hate' Mail in London or News of the World.
I stopped looking online.
I stopped reading the gossip sites, the paparazzi havens. The juicy chain emails that went around the music and entertainment industry. I stopped being sucked in to it.

It's funny because in the past I would justify it by maybe buying the odd gossip rag when I was on a long haul flight. But never in my home. You'd never see copies of the gossip rags in my house. But I'd read them if someone left them around. Or devour them at a photoshoot out of sheer boredom. And then years later it turned into mindlessly following link after link of bullshit online trash when I couldn't sleep at 3 in the morning.

It wasn't subscribing to the gutter press.
I was just, sorta, a casual bystander, right?

But the day I stopped doing that was quite simply the day I received a bunch of articles, sent to me, about me. They were mean, they were inaccurate and just plain spiteful. I'd gone from a member of the audience to an actor in the worst trashy soap of all time : the tabloid. For the first time in my public life I saw first hand what it felt like to be the subject of venom.

So I stopped subscribing to it.
Literally because I didn't want to accidently run into one of those articles and have it ruin my day.
But the unexpected upside was, I felt like a weight of bullshit was just lifted off my shoulders.

The day I turned my back on the dealer, I got a lot more than just protection of fragile lead singer ego.

I didn't care to know who was sleeping with who.
Or who'd had botox.
I didn't know who's movie was flopping.
Who'd been arrested.
Who'd won a grammy.

And then I didn't care what people said about me. Or didn't say.

The only gossip I got was sort of accidental.
And it felt good.

So today, I got one of those accidental pieces of hideous gossip.

I'm at home doing some work emails and my gorgeous friend pops up on I.M and says 'Britney had another meltdown'.

Huh?

Oh Britney. Right. She's still our entertainment even when she's not entertaining.

Show me. Tell me. Google me.

So I did.
And there she was, like our generation's Frances Farmer - being taken away in a stretcher. Being sectioned. Having her dignity and her mental breakdown cut up into bite sized chunks to be spread all over the world for us to digest and cast judgement on.

Now I don't know this lady.
But I know what depression looks like.
And I've seen post natal doldrums.
And all I could think of was how absolutely mortifying it must be
for her children to be at the centre of all this flesh eating consumerism
of meltdown as entertainment. And how they might feel about us all
one day if their mother isn't around anymore.

It's lame I know.
And it's unoriginal.
I'm a hypocrite because I'm on the bandwagon and I'm saying jump off it.
But this isn't about celebrity.
It's about social values.

When did we become a society that held fame up as being more important than
humanitarianism?
And when did it become permissible to not only watch the fall of another and do nothing to help, but to actually film it, record it, send it, upload it, profit from it, digest it, comment on it, sell it, judge it, enjoy it?

What does this say about us as a culture?

My hands feel a bit dirtier tonight.

он знает, почему в него летели бутылки - на сборном концерте, когда выступают СОВСЕМ РАЗНЫЕ исполнители, может быть все

про россию не уверена - особенно учитывая, сколько у нас стоят билеты на концерты+ не каждый желающий попасть на концерт сможет добраться до столиц

вообще, время покажет...неплохо бы для начала выпустить диск и у нас (я про русский релиз)

ну что ты хочешь - халявный концерт, пришли туда все, кто угодно, кто-то музыку послушать, кто-то просто время провести. все люди разные. кто-то вот так выражает свое недовольство чем-либо или кем-либо - в данном случае может быть исполнителем, который не пришелся по вкусу

FINAL SHOW ANNOUNCED FOR BRIGHTON FEB 15TH

This will be the final date to be announced for the February leg of the tour and the last date in the UK for 2008. Tickets for all shows have sold out in minutes and we guarantee this will be the last opportunity for those UK side to witness what The Observer listed as one of the best gigs in Britain in 2007.

Extra Birmingham Tickets Released For Feb 17th Show

Due to overwhelming demand extra tickets are being released for the Birmingham show on February 17th.

As request for tickets have been so strong this show will now take place in the larger room - the Academy 2.

This has allowed us to release a limited number of extra tickets. Those who have missed out on a chance to see Hayes perform in Birmingham will have this one last chance to purchase tickets .

Tickets go on sale FRIDAY January 11th from 9am via http://www.ticketweb.co.uk. A portion of tickets have also been set aside especially for members of Darren's Official Fanclub, Delicacy.

Fan Club Members will be able to purchase their specially reserved tickets using the code provided.

знаешь, как бы Даррен не пытался ЭТО забыть и что бы он там не говорил про то, что"фанаты как всегда были великолепны, а этот случай - это лишь результат недостаточной подготовки организаторов", но от ТАКОГО остаётся что-то типа рефлекса собаки Павлова...
И я думаю, что стоя на российской сцене, он ещё не раз вспомнит эти злосчастные бутылки, даже если не будет об этом думать..

Cuppa Tea

I get bored waiting for you.
Well let me clarify.
I don't get bored per se. More frustrated, anxious, excited, ansty you get the picture.
And by waiting for you, I mean, you know, The Side 2 Tour.

I was on my way to the New Years Eve show and I said to my friends in the car "I'm really excited about playing tonight, I've really missed it!".
And I realized that it had only been a month since I last played live.
And when I finished THAT last performance (albeit an in store acousitc jaunt in the U.S) I was SHATTERED and had run screaming from the microphone into the arms of Chritsmas vacations. Vowing a need to collapse.
But there I was a month later DESPERATE to get back on stage.

It's funny how quickly live performance has become a staple in my life and my identity in the last 12 months.
I used to be someone who only ever toured when there was a record out. And then I'd be off in my promo hell or 'in between album' hiatus.
But this record has given me almost 12 months of solid live dates - from the tiny 200 people shows in Soho to the State Theatres in Australia and now back again into small rooms for 'Side 2'. It's going to make me very sad when it's all over and done.

I had an 'awww' moment this week when we announced that all the UK dates had been released now. To see in print that there'll be no more shows until the next album was quite sobering really. I can't say I'd have been able to keep going on and on forever, but I will say that I hope to wring every drop of sweat I can out of the club tour so I can walk away from 'Delicate..' with the fondest memories.

For those in the U.S who keep asking, we ARE going to announce dates for March soon I promise. We are still jiggling the budgets and dates so it can make sense financially (love ya, but I don't want to go bankrupt to show you! hehe).
So bear with us. I promised I would come and I'm working my way to fullfil that.

In the meantime, I've been watching the edit for the live DVD come to shape more and more each day. I just watched 'Darkness' yesterday and it took my breath away. It's great to be able to see what the audience saw (a truck load of green lasers!) as I obviously never saw the full effect from stage. It's going to be so wonderful to have a permanent record of that intricate production forever on DVD. I can't wait until it's released.

O.K right now it's 7pm in London.
I should be planning some wild weekend but in all honesty I'm going to pop out to the shops and pick up some dinner to cook for
the boys. And make a nice cuppa tea!

For Amanda

Sometimes you meet angels and they're everyday people. They're standing right in front of you, and all your problems pale into insignificance. I've been lucky enough to meet a few of them in my life, but one who touched me so deeply has left our shores for greener pastures.

I wanted to say thank you and to celebrate the life of an angel named Amanda who I had the privilege of meeting on stage in Liverpool last year.

I remember the moment so clearly.
I was singing 'So Beautiful' and I looked down at this lady who had the biggest smile on her face. She was obviously frail from her illness but her smile lit up the universe. I never did this at any other show on the tour but on this night I reached down and asked her to come up on stage with me so I could sing the song to her.

I held her and I felt so humbled to be in the presence of such strength and dignity.

Today I found out that Amanda lost her battle with cancer and my heart broke. But my spirit felt so happy that I'd witnessed a bright spark in an even brighter life.

To Amanda and family, I wanted to thank you for the moment that I shared with your lovely one. I only knew her for a minute but I felt honored to meet a such an extraordinary person with such a gigantic heart.

With love and the deepest gratitude I dedicate 'So Beautiful' to you, Amanda.
It's yours. It was never mine to give away anyway.

тока я так поняла Стив часть фот снес или сделал приватными - я сохранила себе 18 фот оттуда (одну не сохраняла), позже зашла, там кажется было 13 что ли

The Times They Are A Changing

Annie Lennox was dropped by Sony BMG it was announced this week.
But apparently it wasn't true.
For I moment I believed it to be fact - as let's face it a similar and equally dysfunctional thing happened to me a while ago. Apparently her deal just expired and she's yet to re-sign.
I'm still gasping over the fact that a label that was once so great could lose an artist like Annie Lennox.
She's in my opinion the finest voice of our generation. To me, and millions of others she is an essential songwriter/artist/performer/poet/ I could go on and on and on.

But apparently Sony BMG couldn't.

It's a joke isn't it?
How the dying record companies can't see the forest for the trees.
I don't suppose to know the ins and outs of Annie's career or negotiations with Sony.
I suspect, much like all the dinosaurs, Sony are just being cheap.

When I first felt the insulting brush off from a major label my first instinct was to just go and get another deal as quickly as I could.
After all, A RECORD DEAL meant something right?
A TEAM behind me. MONEY. PRESTIGE.

It's a joke isn't it?

It's no secret that I decided to not even try to get another deal.
Literally didn't ask for one meeting.
I just started my own label.

At the time it was considered to be a scary thing. Crazy even.
I'd had a decade under the apparently 'safe' umbrella of a label and for the first time in my career I was about to be without one.

Forming my own label didn't get the same kinds of headlines that Radiohead did.
But I did it first. And when I did it, it was a day to day learning process. I can't deny I have found it financially difficult and challenging to try to compete with the bundles of money that record companies throw at 'priorities'. And radio, to be honest, rarely pays attention to records that don't come with one hand in the pocket. And a link to the evil empire.

But I have soldiered on - often at great cost - to maintain a sense of dignity and rebellion against what I consider to be the ugliest time in the history of popular music.

What's my point?

Well - my point is how lucky Annie should feel.
Because she, me and all those artists who the record companies bled dry of profits are now in the enviable position of holding in our hands the goose and
the golden eggs. The record companies have got rooms full of nothing to sell now.
Scrambling to make ends meet they've forgotten what you, the public want : Music.

And a career.
Through it's ups and downs.

EMI is sacking 2000 staff this week.
How many more bands do you think will get the axe?
And do you know that the new policy is to now do 'research' on albums before they even release them.
Just like Hollywood uses test audiences to decide if a film is worthy. Or if they need to change the ending!
Can you imagine how much more terrible the radio is going to sound now - now that Phony, EMI and the rest of the dinosaurs are deciding what you listen to even before you've had a chance to decide for yourself?
I imagine we can expect new releases that are the music equivalent of Basic Instinct 2.

Do you know, at the end of my record deal, it got so bad that the record company refused to even pay for the transport for my band to get to and from major television shows to perform on them.
We're talking Top Of the Pops and Popworld. They suggested the band could 'get the tube' at their own expense!
Yeah with their amps, guitars, drumkits. Just pop on the tube and front on up and perform for free!


Shame on you, Sony.
Shame on all of you.
The amazing artists are all going it alone.

Whatever Annie decides to do I hope she uses her freedom wisely.
I hope she realizes that the millions of souls around the world who connect with her pain, sorrow, peace and joy are still here.
And this time, perhaps, we'll be able to get to the music without all the bullshit.
